Bluet's Commute

Now Bluet goes to kindergarten, she has to learn the route to walk, because here after a while kids walk to school by themselves. Fortunately it is not very far - 5 minutes for an unaccompanied adult, or 10 minutes for an adult with a slowly moving kid. This is the way we go.

This being Zurich, there is of course an enormous hill to go up before you get there. At this point Bluet inexplicably decides she needs to push Ilona. This does not last long.

And then when we get there the doors are not yet open, which is why Bluet looks sad

BLOGSTRAVEGANZA II

In our second week in Missouri, we took two canoe trips. Camping was something that Bluet had been talking a lot about, and was excited for, so this was a good idea.

The first trip, with Kara and her family, on the Jacks Fork. We saw two cottonmouth snakes swimming while we were on this trip, but from a distance and they were not very interested in us. (Bluet yesterday mentioned the snake bite, and then told me that she liked snakes).

On this first trip Bluet rode in my canoe a little, before moving to Nana's canoe. Meanwhile Ilona mostly rode in Emily's canoe, often leaning over the side with her hands in the water - she did very well with being confined to the boat, although she didn't always keep her sun hat on, and occasionally would grab the paddle or lean over the side of the boat at the wrong time, making it difficult to manoeuvre. However, that is probably just what you would expect from a 20 month old.

We saw some pretty amazing caves (which Bluet illuminated with a torch; at night the torch would be used to have some kind of disco party in the tent when she and Ilona were supposed to be going to sleep). It was very very hot, so we stopped many times to jump in the water and swim to cool down.

Bluet also became interested in fishing, wanting to touch all the fish that were caught. In fact later in the holiday she got a disney princess fishing rod (or fishing rob, as she calls it) and even caught and reeled in her first fish in a creek on the Brunot farm - a small big mouth bass).

And then after two nights on the river we went to the Brunot cabin before embarking on our second canoe trip. And saw the cows, which Ilona has learned to imitate more accurately than just saying 'moo'

After two nights in real beds we were back on the river........

By the end of these trips, Bluet became pretty fearless in the water (at least when she was wearing her water wings/life jacket combo), happy to float along. On the second trip (on the North Fork) were plenty of other kids (including all her American cousins) so she was able to copy the bigger kids, and was very happy. I don't have many pictures, but I can tell you that it was a bit less hot than the first trip, I found some very cool fossils, and slightly injured my leg* on a rock hidden underwater whilst helping Bluet float down the river.

*I was still able to paddle the canoe and stay on the river for the next 2 days.

As you can see, Bluet even learned to swim a little, aided no doubt by several trips to a swimming pool in someone's garden in Charleston, where she even got to jump off a diving board by herself. So there you have it, almost an entire week spent in the wilderness, enjoying the pleasures of Ozark rivers. A fun time was had by all, I think I can safely say. More photos from our trip coming soon.

Kindergarten

One of the reasons we returned from our summer holidays was that Bluet had to start kindergarten on Monday (the other reason was that we had to go back to work). She wasn't too nervous heading off in the morning, and when I picked her up (it was her first day) she was very happy. We haven't found out much about what she does there (she sat next to a girl to eat her snack yesterday, and today she played with some shape blocks). However, at night she always asks 'what day is it in the morning', and then when we tell her, she asks 'what to we do on Tuesdays? '(or whatever day it might be). When Emily told her yesterday that she would get to go to playgroup on Tuesdays as well as Mondays, she was genuinely surprised and happy to learn she would get to go again.

Unfortunately Bluet has learned to say 'Cheese' when you try and take her photo.

After kindergarten, they let Bluet out with shoes on the wrong feet

Meanwhile, while we were waiting to go pick Bluet up yesterday (it was a short first day - although they are all morning only days), Ilona played with these hexagons, and was very excited to learn how to fit them together.

BLOGSTRAVEGANZA!

Untitled

We returned yesterday from the US of A. Strangely I woke up at 8AM, so I must be over jet lag already. Let's see. The flight back was long, but uneventful (actually 3 flights back - St Louis - Chicago - Dusseldorf - Zurich. Not much sleeping going on in 20h of travelling. Highlight - Ilona coming back from going to the lavatory with Emily, and talking about the 'loud noise' in the bathroom of the toilet flushing for about an hour. Also, the sushi at Chicago O'hare was pretty good.

Anyway, it has been a while. So I will recap what we got up to in Missouri over the next few days.

Ilona on the plane. NB she doesn't really like being on the plane. Especially when it has to make an unscheduled stop in London

The first week (I can't remember much - it was all about getting over the jetlag, and was a blur a week later). So, when we arrived in St Louis on Sunday we found out about Hamil having been bitten by a snake the previous night. The plan had been for Emily, Abatha, Wayne and I to go to the baseball game Sunday afternoon, just after arrival. However, Emily and Abatha decided they would rather go see Hamil and make sure he was OK, and Wayne was also with Hamil as as a snake expert, he wanted to reassure Hamil he would be ok (he was, and was back out on the river camping with us a week and a bit later).

As I had to be in St Louis on Monday to go to a green card appointment, I stayed in St Louis while they headed to the farm. So I went to the game on my own. The game went into extra inning scoreless, which was not ideal, given the jetlag. But eventually the Mets won, which is good (although I had to leave before the end due to fatigue). After a day in St Louis dealing with my green card and then buying some jeans and records, I flew on a very small plane from St Louis to Cape Giradeau to meet up with everyone else. Which was kind of fun because the skies were clear and blue.

Ok, back to what you are really interested in, pictures of the kids-.....So back on the farm, we went for dinner with Bluet and Ilona's great grandmother (not pictured) at Outback Steakhouse. Bluet still looks somewhat jetlagged

It was hot, so to cool down some clothes came off.

This is apparently common, but has a beautiful tail, so I was impressed

On Wednesday or Thursday of our first week, Emily's friend from University, Kara, came with her family to enjoy Missouri. They also joined us on a canoe trip (see the next week). Here we are enjoying the sun in Hamil's garden
