Iceland

Last Saturday Emily set off with Bluet and Ilona to meet her parents in Iceland. Here they are laden and ready to go

And here are the photos I have been sent from Iceland - looks like a cool place. I'm not sure what they are up to in all of them, so I will try and guess.

Fortunately you can buy pasta in Iceland, and thus the kids can eat

No idea what is going on here

These are from yesterday when they went to a place where you can see (and apparently touch) puffins

And so this evening I am off to meet them (Emily and the kids, not the puffins) at Basel airport, which I am very much looking forward to

New neighbours

image

We have new neighbours who are very nice. They have a kid, Hugo, who is approximately Ilona's age, and Bluet and Ilona both love playing with him. In fact, every afternoon when we get home from work, they will be out in the garden playing with him, if he is home. Bluet and Ilona like to use his sand pit, while he swings on their swings. The other day when I came home he wasn't yet back, so Bluet and Ilona were waiting on this wall not for me, but for when he would come home to play.

Ilona Kruger

One of Ilona's favourite games (or at least it was, last week) is to put pen caps on her fingertips:

Bluet's 5th Birthday

image

Sunday was bluet's fifth birthday, as I am sure you are aware. Up early out of bed, we had birthday blueberry pancakes and some present opening, which brought great joy, as you can see

Then I retreated to the kitchen to make a pink birthday cake (as requested), followed by muffins, while Emily got the house ready for the Birthday party. What the kids did during this time, I have no idea. At two Bluet's friends started to arrive (we hung birthday balloons so they could find the house. 9 kids ran around, and nine kids are cake and ice cream, and then, after some more running around, the party was over.

(earlier in the day, Ilona has a tea party with Emily - note the tablecloth, ready for the party)

Kindergarten Birthday

image image

Today was Bluet's official kindergarten birthday. They take it seriously here. First, we had to make some kind of treat for all 20 kids in the class - we made cookies with smarties. Then I had to go with Bluet to school and hang around through the festivities. They do the same thing for all the kids as Bluet knew what she was doing. First, she got to sit at the head of the class at a special desk, where there were toys she was allowed to play with while all the other kids toys had been put away. There were some songs, birthday related and not. The teacher gave Bluet a knitted bird as a present which she loves. At one point, she had to pick a friend to dance around in the circle of kids sitting in their chairs, which she loved (she chose Tara, one of the other kids who speaks English). There was a bit where anyone who wanted could put up their hand, come over, and give Bluet birthday wishes. There were 5 tea lights, and songs about the number 5, and a dice where they had to do something each time the teacher showed the number 5. Then some kids made an arch with their hands, and Bluet went underneath, followed by everyone else. There was a conga line. But I think the thing Bluet enjoyed most was when she got to stand on a chair with a drum, which she banged while the other children danced. When she stopped, she would do something with the drum stick, like spin it round, and they would have to copy what she did. Each time the one who was slowest, or did the wrong thing was eliminated. Then everyone got to eat their cookie.

After that (which took about an hour), it was back to normal. Everyone had to draw around their hand and colour it in, for some reason. Strangely when Emily went to kindergarten Bluet also had to draw round her hand to make an Easter rabbit. So I assume this is what they learn most days. Then after snack time (even I got a coffee) it was time to play outside, and Bluet told me I could go home. Overall, it was surprisingly entertaining, and nice to see what Bluet does, and who she spends her time with every day.

Easter Weekend

Here is what we got up to on Easter weekend. On Saturday we took the kids to get their faces painted

There was also hairstyling going down

IMG_6069

They also both got to make rabbits from flowerpots. Bluet's rode the best seat on the tram on the way home

Then it was time to enjoy the garden in the sun

Before the face painting, some eggs needed dyeing

On Sunday the eggs were hunted

And, of course, there was some rain
