Weekend in New York

It has been a busy last few weeks, so this weekend we are mainly enjoying doing nothing together. First thing Saturday, we went for a walk and to do some errands,

Then we went to the Library across the Street from our house. For some reason despite the convenience, it is the first time we have done this. Bluet found a book about Elmo, obviously, and climbed on some chairs.

Then it was nap and lunchtime for everyone. After lunch we headed to the park together for the first time in forever. I discovered that there is now a panorama function on the iphone, so I used it. See if you can spot Emily and Bluet in this photo.

We headed off through the park in the general direction of the playground. Of course, Bluet really wanted to play in the mud and pick up sticks.

And play with the straps on her pram, even though she can do that in the comfort of her own home. She now knows how to click the plastic clicky things together, but not how to open them up. So she clicks them shut, then holds out her hands to show us she is done, and ask us to unclick the clicky things so she can click them again. Ad infinitum.

Eventually Bluet tired of clicking clicky things, and we moved closer to the playground. See if you can spot Bluet and Emily in this panorama

Finally, we made it to the playground.

Bluet then spent some time learning to swing on the big swings. Right now she doesn't seem to be enjoying it. She is just concentrating really hard about not falling off.

After a tiring day, she read a different Elmo book on the ride home.

This morning, Bluet and I headed back to the park while Emily worked on tidying the house. It was a beautiful cold and sunny day.

We stopped a while on the great lawn, and Bluet clicked the clicky things again. She also played a bit of football - she is getting v. good.

I took another panorama. Here you should be able to spot Bluet quite easily as the park was very quiet.

We then headed to Barnes and Noble via Panera bread, where Bluet and I shared a bagel. On the way she took off her shoe, then her sock, and spent the next 10 minutes trying to put the sock back on. She is not very good at it yet.

Happy 18 month birthday!

Sorry the pictures are so blurry. She moves so fast.

After the wedding

On Sunday we were pleased to leave the hotel, and accepted the offer of one of Emily's friends to stay in their house in DC on Sunday night, even though they were going to be away. They have 3 kids, so Bluet was happy to play with all the toys, and we all enjoyed pretending we had a real house, even if just for one day. We even had some regular blog readers over for dinner - I think they really came to see Bluet though.

Then on Sunday we got back in the car and headed home via Baltimore. Another well designed city with proper rows of terraced houses made of brick. We stopped by the harbour and had breakfast at Jimmy's, then hung around with another of Emily's friends, a local resident now working for Obama. He took some pictures of us which I will add to the blog once Emily has vetted them. Hopefully there are some of Bluet feeding left-over toast from Jimmy's to the local duck population, which I think was one of the high points of her life.

The wedding last weekend

Saturday began in Alexandria, a small town near DC that could probably be described as quaint. I felt very at home as we wandered around the terraced streets. If only more American cities used this classic design from the old country. We found a playground whic unlike in New York we could sit on a bench and let Bluet roam free. She loved it.

Post nap we headed to the wedding. There was an Indian ceremony with a slightly eccentric priest who insisted he was following the ceremony as laid out in the official book issued by the Indian government. The ceremony lasted for about an hour, and there was no way Bluet could keep still that long. We thought we could placate her by showing Sesame Street on the iPhone with no sound, but as soon as she saw Murray she squealed loudly, and had to be removed. Fortunately the ceremony was outside and next to a playground, so we took turns in watching her. We'd kept Bluet up until 21:00 at the rehearsal dinner the night before which may or may not have been a mistake, but it meant that Emily had to take her home before the dinner which was v sad.

Multimedia

We have returned safely from Washington DC. Bluet very much enjoyed her road trip, and once i have sorted through all the photos, I will post them here. In the meantime, here is a video of Bluet talking in the back of the car, and some audio of Bluet speaking. You can watch these again and again if you like.

Bluet's first road trip

Friday

Even though it doesn't take that much longer than travelling from the St Louis airport to her Grandparents house, I am going to classify this weekend trip to DC as Bluet's first road trip. We picked up the rental car at a shopping mall in Jersey City (a money saving tip there) stopping only to purchase Bluet the fancy shoes you will see her wearing in some of these photos.

Once we strapped Bluet into her lovely new car seat, she was happy and was extremely well behaved all the way. As a bonus treat we stopped at the house of some friends with kids in DC and Bluet got to try out many new toys. Which is what she is also doing right now. Then we headed on to Alexandria for the wedding. More to follow.....
